When is it too late to do leg stretching?

I wonder when is it too late to do leg stretching for taekwondo-like training, i.e. doing all those kicks, including high-level kicks. At what age will it be too late for leg stretching? I am almost 29 now and I wonder if my leg can still be trained to do split, for example, and ultimately prepare for high-level kicks training.

It’s not too late, but getting there will require more patience and following the rules more closely. You can do splits, but don’t be misled into thinking you can do high kicks because you can do splits, or that splits are required to do high kicks. Neither are true, but so many people have this expectation – unless your goal is flashy kicks, and not sparring.

Remember, most of your high kicks need to reach no more than a few inches above an opponent your size or less. Anyone larger, you don’t want to be using high kicks. So to kick higher than your opponent your size, you will find that split position isn’t necessary.

Read Tom Kurz’s books, DVD, and web site; he explains everything scientifically and accurately, and posts his sources and experiences. He gives good stretching advice, but unfortunately, he leaves out development of power, at least, to my liking. But start with this, it’s excellent reading.

Leg stretches in Boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

As there are no kicking in Boxing and BJJ (or may be very little in BJJ), are there any leg stretches/leg splits/groin stretches done in training classes of Boxing and BJJ? Thanx. If so, do they do full leg splits?

im not really sure im pretty sure they strecth jsut so the muscles arent tight i think bjj stretch more cuz they gotta reach around with there legs and shit. but i definetly know TKD do full groin stretches splits and everything becasue we do higher kicks and tkd is more kicks than aything

I need stretches please help me. I wanna get flexible and be a gymnast.

the most important part is too stretch every day! it gets easier as time goes on. to stretch your splits, you can slide into them (hold for 30 seconds). stay in your split & lean forward, trying to get your hands past your front ankle(hold for 30 seconds). stay in your split & throw back your neck, lean your whole body toward your back leg, with your chin to the ceiling (hold for 30 seconds). stay in your split & lift your arms above your head (hold for 30 seconds). then switch legs & repeat! also, you can do your splits with your front leg elevated up on a mat or cushion. good luck, hope this helps (:

Yes i take 5 hours of Ballet a week and two hours of jazz a week

This is a ponche (Or technically a pitch as your body is parallel with the ground instead of resisting and arching up). I definitely think you can achieve this by August if you are willing to practice as much as possible. Make sure to stretch. If you want to be at 180 you’re obviously going to need your splits as well as the ability to hold said splits while you go down. You will also need to work on your balance. I would suggest going up against the wall, and doing your splits there to practice getting that feeling… of course keep your hands on the ground. Also just start trying to do the pitch. The more you practice (even if you completely fail at first ) the better you’ll be in the long run. Perhaps use a barre for balance, or even if you’re room use your bed for balance. Hold your core to help you balance as well as experiment with where you’re standing on your foot.

Iliotibial Band (ITB) Stretch

Everest Therapeutics demonstrates proper stretch of your Iliotibial Band, otherwise known as the IT Band.

This video shows how to stretch your right IT band. You stand with your right leg positioned behind your left leg, keeping both legs straight. To engage the upper fibres of the right IT Band, lift your right arm up and lean slightly towards the left. You should be now feel a nice stretch down the whole lateral torso into the outside of the right leg.

Holding this stretch for a minimum of 30 seconds, to maximum of 90 seconds, will provide a nice lengthening and stretch release to the right IT Band.
